Let me take a moment to describe my history and background. I am an educator in a public school district in South Carolina. I have been working in public and private education for 25 years and have certifications in four areas. My husband and I are privileged to have two children and five grandchildren. I have enjoyed the coastal environments of Georgia and South Carolina since my youth. I am a hiker with an abiding love for the barrier islands, teeming marshes and winding tidal rivers of the southeast.
As a support services teacher, I have had exposure to multiple grade level standards. This affords an understanding of teachers’ need to have access to cross-curricular material that will address academic standards in varied and engaging ways. My goal has been to create a series of “tidal river tales” in a coastal setting that serves that purpose. Two "tales" have been written. The first is published and the second will be in 2011.
My husband, Charles, wrote his Master’s thesis on the South Carolina explorer Dr. Henry Woodward. Together we are completing the first of three historical fiction pieces for a target audience of 3rd-5th grade students and a readability of about 4th grade. The book chronicles the early adventures of Dr. Woodward as he begins the exploration of South Carolina. It is especially relevant to coastal history and fits a unique niche due to its alignment with several of the South Carolina, Georgia and Florida curriculum standards for 3rd and 4th grade Social Studies.
